Sidney Frank Challis was born in Brinkley in 1897, (Newmarket Q1-1897 3B:526) baptised on 16th May 1897 in Brinkley, the son of Allen and Rosina CHALLIS (née DRURY).

1901 census...Aged 4, he was at School Lane, Brinkley with his father Allen CHALLIS [54] Under gardener, domestic, born Boro Green; his mother Rosina [41] born Great Welnetham, Suffolk; brother William E [18] under shepherd, sisters Mabel A [11], Rose M [10] and Ellen E [7], brother Herbert [6] and sister Dorothy G [1]. All the children were born in Brinkley.

1911 census...Aged 14, a farm labourer, he was still at School Lane, Brinkley, with his parents (father now a road labourer), sister Ellen Eliza, brother Herbert John, a farm labourer,and sisters Dorothy Grace and Florence Eva [7] born Brinkley. His mother had born 12 children but one had died.


Enlisted in Newmarket.
Without his Army records and his being wounded, the whereabouts of his being wounded is not known. However the 8th Suffolks were heavily involved in the capture of parts of the Schwaben Redoubt and Thiepval village at the end of September 1916, suffering over 200 casualties before being withdrawn to billets in Forceville on the 29th September, remaining out of the line until October 14th.
